AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Texas Department of Transportation is alerting drivers to some construction that will cause traffic delays on South MoPac Expressway at the Slaughter Lane intersection for months.

The department will begin building a new overpass at the intersection. In preparation for the project, the Slaughter Lane roadway will be closed at MoPac. Traffic will be shifted to a new temporary roadway just south of the intersection.

The traffic shift will begin at 5 p.m. Sunday. Officials expect that drivers will have to use the temporary roadway for about six months while they complete the project.

Between 5 p.m. Sunday and 5 a.m. Monday, police officers will be on scene to help direct traffic and ease the transition. TxDOT also has signs in place to alert drivers about the closure.

In addition to the Slaughter Lane closure, the right-turn lane on both southbound and northbound MoPac will be closed during the six month period, and the middle through-lane will be double as a shared through and a right-turn lane.

Officials anticipate that throughout the course of the closure, traffic times in the area will increase and drivers should plan accordingly.
